DB Cargo has been transporting chemical products for the Ludwigshafen-based chemicals group BASF throughout Germany and Europe for many years. Two years ago, an innovative shuttle concept was introduced and successfully established to connect two plant sites. BASF has extended this contract for a further two years.

Germany has set itself the goal of becoming climate neutral by 2045. Green hydrogen offers a source of hope when it comes to avoiding carbon emissions. However, the infrastructure required to transport the volumes that are estimated to be needed by 2030 to industrial sites does not yet exist. This is where DB Cargo comes in.

The principle is clear: the more goods that are transported by rail, the better for the climate. Many companies are therefore working on making their transport chain more sustainable. Often, like the chemical company CABB, they are teaming up with a strong partner such as DB Cargo to help them do so.

The new Maxi Terminal Hamm, which opened in September, offers a large combined transport portfolio and specialises in handling chemicals and dangerous goods. The year-round connection to the seaports in Antwerp and Rotterdam, the large dangerous goods storage facility with capacity for up to 1,200 containers and the ability to handle load units of any size are making Hamm a logistics hub for chemicals and dangerous goods.

It's been in the news for several weeks now: The water levels of European rivers are making navigation difficult. The Middle Rhine Valley is one of the areas of the Rhine with so little water that ships and barges cannot navigate the river with their intended load. For many companies this is causing supply bottlenecks, which are particularly problematic when production processes are tightly scheduled.

Operated by DB Cargo Scandinavia, the Taulov Kombiterminal in central Denmark is one of the most important hubs for intermodal transport services to and from Scandinavia. DB Cargo BTT's customers benefit from specific logistics and additional services from a single source.

Ethylene oxide, ammonia and mineral oil are just three examples of different substances that have one thing in common: They are classified as dangerous goods. And that means that when chemicals like these need to be transported, the focus has to be on doing it safely. DB Cargo BTT, with its more than 30 years of dangerous goods expertise, shows just how successfully this can be done.

DB Cargo BTT has joint the innovative intra-logistics concept for the BASF plant with its own investment in brand-new 45 ft tank containers. What makes it special: This tank container can hold significantly more volume than its standard counterpart and can also be stacked.

Transporting specialist chemicals in single wagon freight traffic to industrial companies throughout Europe – that’s the task DB Cargo BTT is solving for Evonik. With a new transport concept, the team has not only maintained existing traffic, but also improved turnaround times to win new transports.
